How to Create an Awesome Home Game Room

Now that the summer has come and you are thinking of converting the extra room into a game room for the kids or yourself. This room can be a family room, or a room for you and your friends to get together for fun, so why not add a game table you can use to play board games, and perhaps a soccer table, or an air hockey game table or a billiard table.

However, in this age of technology you can have a big screen TV and a game console with lots of video games in the game room.

What is the best way to decorate this room? What colors should you use? What about wallpaper? Below are some ideas you may want to consider.

First, be sure to use bright colors. Stay away from dark colors – no one wants to play in a dark room. Use “fun” colors such as light green, light yellow, and light orange, but try to only use the orange as an accent color. You should not paint an entire wall orange. Bright colors will raise the excitement level in the room, whereas dark colors will only bring gloom to the room.

If the game room is big enough, try to section off the room so that your friends and family can easily move from one area of the room to the other. For example, you may want to designate one area of the room as the card and/or board game area and place the table in that section of the room. The other area of the room could be designated as the TV area. Here, you can play video games or watch the Super Bowl or other sports games.

Another great item to add, is a karaoke machine. Be sure to have lots of sing-along lyrics, not only for the kids, but for the adults as well!

The next part comes is selecting the furniture for the room. The furniture you choose for the game room depends mostly on the familys definition of game room. If the game room is for kids, then you can add an appropriately sized table for the child to sit at while coloring or drawing, playing with puzzles or doing crafts is a must along with a sturdy chair. A good toy box that could double as a hope chest for the child later is another good furniture item to include in the room. Throw in a couple of chairs for the kids to wallow on and your furniture needs are met!

A game room for older kids will differ in its furniture needs. A table with sturdy chairs will still be vital. Older kids who like to watch television or movies and play video games will also need a solid entertainment center or TV stand on which to hold the TV set. Youll need more seating for older kids, too. They tend to have more friends visiting and will require more seating area.

If your game room is for adults, in addition to any favorite games, like pool or billiards, you will want your game room to have quality furniture in it too. Select a nice sofa or sectional with plenty of seating. Select coffee and end tables that can move quickly to accommodate snack trays or your favorite board game. If you are going to have video games in your game room, make sure your seating is placed for good game play.

If your game room is going to be used for hobbies, make sure your furniture is suited for the hobby of your choice. If your hobby is scrap booking, you will need a good, comfortable desk and a nice chair. A hobby such as needle point would require a comfortable chair with good back support and good lighting. If writing is your hobby, your game room may take on the look of a home office instead. Invest in good furniture that includes a computer desk and a comfortable chair.

No matter what your familys definition of game room is, you can utilize it best and get the most enjoyment from it when you furnish it according to its intended use.
